The Community Has Had Poisoned Drinking Water Since 2009 as a result of Fracking Operations and Injection Wells.
Dimock, Pa. – Pennsylvanian activists across the state will converge in Dimock tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 16, in support of the community, environmental justice epicenter, that has suffered from the health impacts of ongoing fracking operations. Groups are calling on Gov. Josh Shapiro and state leaders to reinstate the fracking moratorium in Dimock and provide residents with fresh, clean water.
"Poisoning people for energy should not be an election strategy in a sane world," said Craig Stevens, a 6th generation landowner from Silver Lake Township, Susquehanna County and clean water activist. "People need to see what's happening here with their own eyes. That's why we are inviting people, media and leaders to come and take the tour. It's time for the governor to show up."
As attorney general, Shapiro charged Cabot Oil & Gas with polluting Dimock residents’ water. A plea bargain was negotiated last year with the company’s successor Coterra Energy who agreed to pay Pennsylvania-American Water Company $16.3 million to extend underground pipes to provide clean water to residents. A new public water system has yet to be installed.
To add to this ongoing insult, this week fracking company CNX released a report on the results of efforts to monitor six air pollutants at a few fracking sites and made sweeping claims that there were no public health risks from the fracking emissions. Pennsylvania environment groups responded swiftly yesterday in refuting those claims. Read the press release here.
The event on Friday, August 16, will include a Toxic Tour of the Dimock community and industry sites, a tour of a soon-to-open environmental center and a rally at 2:30 p.m. featuring residents who will address the ongoing systemic violation of residents' environmental rights.
